Why we love the PlayStation 5 controller
We know, not everybody has had the privilege to hold it yet. Also, it was not very popular when it was first introduced. Immediately comparisons with Microsofts Xbox controllers were made and gamers had to get used to the futuristic design of the controller, especially with its colors: not just black or white, but black and white. After using it for over a month we can truly say we love PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller. Here’s why.
Sony’s DualSense controller is not that farfetched from the PlayStation 4 controller though. It still has the same aesthetic and size. However, the change is in the haptic feedback. Especially when you play the free game Astro’s Playroom, you will experience those trigger effects. If you walk through some grass you will notice the texture just by the vibrations, which are truly different from when you are shooting with a gun, for example.
Another thing we love about the DualSense controller is the microphone. It was added to the controller and it offers multiple fun solutions. First: when a friend wants to chat with you, you can just do it out loud as you can hear your friend from your controller speaker and talk back in the controller. No stressy searches for your headphones anymore. And there is another thing: PlayStation has actually added the opportunity to blow into the microphone as a part of the gameplay. You might remember that from Nintendo DS.
The design with the Cruella DeVille’esque black and white might not totally be up your alley, it does help differentiate the controllers from any other controllers easily. Whenever we have our black or white Xbox Series X controllers laying around, we never accidentally grab those when we want to play PlayStation 5 as those controllers have such a different look. We are wondering when Sony will introduce customization options though, cause we feel these controllers might look even better in black and pink or white and blue, for example.
Another thing to be happy about, now that we mentioned the Xbox Series X controllers, is the way you charge them. In Xbox Series X’s controller, you will need to use batteries, which seems wasteful and -especially with all the lockdowns going on- very annoying. The PlayStation 5 controller is easy to charge thanks to its USB-C port, especially as you’ll probably always have a USB-C charger laying around for your smartphone or other smart products. You can even charge and play at the same time.
Being able to charge the controllers is so much better than using actual batteries
The speakers in the controller are so much better and seem to be used a lot more. In Sackboy for example, you will often hear a scream coming from the controller when your little Sackperson falls off a cliff. It is fun in Spider-Man: Miles Morales too: whenever a cat is nearby, you will hear it meowing from your controller. Just like in Ghost of Tsushima, that sound coming from the controller adds another dimension. Sometimes it will scare you, cause we imagine horror games will definitely make use of that a lot too, but often it will make the gaming experience feel even richer.
So, there is lots to love about the new PlayStation 5 controller. Though it is also fun to see it be torn apart:
