Cristiano Ronaldo coming to Free Fire as a character
Free Fire is huge. You might not be aware of the game, but especially in Brasil it is a very popular one. Exciting news for the fans: Cristiano Ronaldo will be global brand ambassador, meaning the iconic player will be included in the game. His character is called Chrono.
Free Fire is a battle royale game by 111 Dots Studio. In 2019 it was the most downloaded mobile game on the planet. It has more than 80 million daily active users. Quite a big game that you might want to try. Together with 49 other people you will land on an island and you have to look for anything to kill them. You do not need to have a super high end phone to enjoy this game: even if you have a low budget smartphone you can still thoroughly enjoy the game. Hundreds of millions of people have already downloaded the game.
So no wonder the studio was able to persuade the Portuguese superstar to be a part of the game. Harold Teo, producer at Free Fire, said that the addition of the football player is huge as he is a role model for many people. Presenting him as a virtual character to millions of people all over the world -Free Fire is also very popular in Thailand for example- is very exciting, he said. “Our partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo offers even more ways for our communities all over the world to enjoy Free Fire.”
Don’t look for Ronaldo in the game, look for Chrono. It is even referred to as ‘Operation Chrono’, which is an update you will need to have the Cristiano Ronaldo character in the game. Cristiano said: “It’s a great feeling having not only a character in Free Fire modelled after me, but also having the whole universe within the game changing along with it.” We are excited too, as it is awesome to see football, gaming and tech coming together in a game that is so loved around the whole planet. We love games to enjoy with many people and Free Fire is exactly that.
The futuristic looking Chrono is now available in Free Fire. It is funny he is so futuristic, as the collaboration marks the first time a global sports icon has a huge collaboration with a mobile game. It obviously shows how mobile games have become more important, which is very cool, considering many people tend to use their smartphones less since the pandemic hit us. On the other hand people have more time to play games, as other forms of entertainment are less possible due to the pandemic.
Eventually it is probably really exciting for Ronaldo too. Many sports players have turnt to gaming as it is not possible for them to play their sports in real life. Did you know that football players like Gareth Bale, David Beckham and Mesut Ozil are big investors in esports? Beckham works together with Guild Esports. A very logical decision, as the fans of the sports might turn to esports. Plus: esports fans are super loyal.
As we are not sure what the world will look like in the future, we will see if these sports players eventually keep sponsoring esports or refocus on their usual sports once the leagues are up and running again. For now Ronaldo has proven to be a very good addition to a game that is played -and loved- by millions, just like the football player himself.
